Humans

Same as we ever were…?

Throughout the years, humanity has somehow endured… or been brought back, toward what purpose, it is unaware.  Humans now seem to be largely unchanged, physiologically, though they are increasingly manifesting a powerful ability to blend their consciousnesses with reality (psionics, called the hell science).

The four heritages of humankind today are the Cnids (the so-called Desert Peoples, the Nuri, the Obelenes, and the Qozzi in Latura; supposedly a minority among the southern peoples—Sasparadans and Faldan—in Pala), the Tephni (supposedly the majority of the southern peoples—Sasparadans and Faldan—in Pala; possibly extinct), the Zaadi (the Fiazzi in Latura; all of the humans of the Five Mesas; the northern peoples of Pala—the Carvolians, Dravanians, Vennari, Gilspari, and Fjatali), and the Lat (the Laturans besides the Cnids, Obelenes, Nuri, and Qozzi; unknown in Pala).

Generally, the Lat are dark-skinned and have brown or green eyes and dark hair; the Cnids and Tephni are tall and olive and have dark hair and a range of eye colors, including blue; and the Zaadi are olive or pale, with light hair and eyes, including gray and red.

Tensions between groups in the far future hinge upon class, of course, as well as history and current attitudes towards hell science.  In Latura, hell science is strictly controlled by, in their respective areas, the Laturan Imperial Psychonauts, the Nuri Necrophants (death-cult leaders), and the Fiazzi Verifiers (high imams and scientists in the royal court).

In Pala, the primary conflicts are Carvolian–Dravanian (“loyal”/ultramontane versus “pragmatic”/proto-capitalist), Carvolian–Vennari (“noble”/feudal versus mercantile/bourgeois), and human–unhuman (genetic).  The other species increasingly play a role in these tensions, and time will tell if, for example, the traditional squamid–human (anti-unhuman) alliance can hold.

The human languages are Laturan, Fiazzi, Qozzi, Nuri, Obelene, and the various Cnid tongues in the Latura; Mesan and Siltish in the Five Mesas; and—in Pala—Carvolian, Vennari, Squamid (and the various Squamish patois—including Vennari–Varanish, Vennari–Scincish, etc.), Fjatali (barbarian–gmothi patois), Frundi (various barbarian tongues), Old Tephnian, New Tephnian (Sasparadan), Western Tephnian (Faldani and its closely related tongues, including Korish, Garandish, and Riffani), and Northern Tephnian (almost extinct).

The most common languages of Pala are CarvolianVennari, and Old and New Tephnian.
